ESPN's Web Hits Are Insane (Hire a Guy for Made-up Job)

Tuesday, January 09, 2007

At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Disney President & CEO Robert Iger said during his keynote yesterday, ESPN.com averaged 25 million page views on Mondays during the NFL season, the largest such total for that day in company history and boosted significantly by the net's successful acquisition of the broadcast rights to "MNF."

After a video introduction by CEA chief Gary Shapiro that spoofed ESPN’s Monday Night Football show open and a taped lead-in from the MNF broadcast crew of Mike Tirico, Joe Theismann and Tony Kornheiser, Iger’s “Monday Night Keynote” featured clips of popular Disney content playing on various platforms and stage visits from Tirico, Lost stars Evangeline Lily and Matthew Fox, and Pirates of the Caribbean producer Jerry Bruckheimer.

He also announced a retooling of Disney.com and showed a beta version of myespn.com.

Watch out Fanhouse.....ESPN is coming (whooooooo). I was thinking this was a big deal for a second....because hey, 25 million page views is a hell of a lot (30,000 during Ass-Gate last week almost made me pass out). But then I looked into the actual guest-list for the awards, and cringed.....umm, maybe this isn't the best place to have such a speech. "Legendary musicians, actors and sports icons will all come together at the 2007 International CES to experience the hottest products and technologies in the consumer electronics industry."

To attend: George Gervin, Dr. Jerry Punch, Kyle Busch, Model Teresa Noreen (she appears all three days, and I've never heard of her), Clyde Drexler, Matt Leinart (this has to be part of some community service), 3 Doors Down (I hope they play Kryptonite for the nerds), Cirque de Soleil, George Benson, Al Jarreau, Dominique Wilkins, Beach Boy Brian Wilson, and Hulk Hogan.

That my friends is a stellar guest list. Are you telling me that Tommy Chong and Tonya Harding weren't available?
_______________

Keeping with the ESPN theme....they've hired a guy named Robert Wallace to be the VP of (get this) Original Entertainment. Wallace will be in charge of "unscripted and reality programming". Silly you, here you thought ESPN wasn't turning into MTV.

Update: The Lord of the Fanhouse Manor Jamie "Mister Irrelevant" Mottram chimes in......
myespn.com couldn't be more different from FanHouse. Think of myespn as a lame, sports version of myspace. That said, ESPN should totally create a FanHouse blogging network of their own. Every major sports site should.

AOL has been totally ahead of the curve on this one, and I'm not just saying that because we created it. Look at the numbers: 9% to 91% web traffic growth month-to-month with a relatively fixed budget!
I couldn't agree more (I hope you know that myESPN comment was sarcastic Mr. Mottram). myESPN is a joke.....see for yourself.....

Anything ESPN creates is so necessarily ESPN-centric that there will be no escape from the endless cross-promotion. AOL doesn't have to answer to anybody in the sports world, ESPN will always have to dampen any provocative thought in order to appease their various daddies.
