Dick Vitale Will See Your Politically Correctness, And Raise You

Tuesday, June 12, 2007

Okay, you know my stance on using terms like "fag", "gay", and "retarded to make a point. If it bothers someone you shouldn't use it. If you do use it...you apologize and move on. It's that easy.

Well sometime(s) we take Political Correctness a bit too far. So far it makes you sound like an idiot.

Listening to Mike & Mike yesterday Dick Vitale was on to rant and rave about something that I've since forgotten. They always go through a feature with him called "Stock Up, Stock Down" where he says who/what is hot right now (genius concept I know). Dickie V brought up F-1 driver Lewis Hamilton who became the first black driver to win a race this past weekend. Here's Dickie's quote....

"Lewis Hamilton...the first African-American driver to win a Formula One Race..."

Audio (3:40)

So what's wrong with that you ask? Well Mr. Hamilton is from England...which if you're looking at a map is not in America. So in his attempt to be politically correct Dick V. just made himself look bad.

(Thanks to reader SG for the tip!)

Just a matter of time.

I mean, think about "African-American" sometime...does it make ANY sense?

I can't stand saying that. But Bill Clinton was, after all, our frist black President, but maybe not African American, maybe only on Kwaaaanzaaa.

I had a friend in college- both parents white American missionaries in Africa, where he was born.

So my buddy was white, but he was also an African-American.

Anyone who hasn't heard George Carlin's take on this really needs to go download it. Like usual he takes the term to task on how it can easily be accurate and misrepresented.

So is Mr. Hamilton English African-American? O is he African-English? Or English-African?

He's an African-Englishman.

Or maybe he is white?

I saw Lani Guinier once, on a BET panel on CSPAN, proclaim that Clarence Thomas isn't *really* black...

That is completely nutso.

He's actally a third-generation Afro-Carribean Englishman.

I think 'black' or 'English' might be a bit easier... ;)

Just goes to show that no one cares about the men that race cars for a living.

I think if you wanted to refer to Hamilton using that construction the correct phrase would be 'British-Grenadian'. But don't quote me!

It's not Dickie V's fault. He simply became confused when asked to speak about something other than how great Duke and Coach K are.
