Someone Should Warn Jimmy Johnson Of The Scheduled Flyover

Thursday, January 03, 2008

This cracked me up during the pregame show. Great job on the anthem by American Idoler Katherine McPhee, but someone forget to tell Chris Rose, Riggins and Jimmy Johnson about the flyover....

LOOK OUT JIMMY!

What's the point of a flyover if you don't show it?
These BCS games are produced by Corky from 'Life Goes On.'

Thanks Sports Fanatic and yes it was at night but you could still see the lights if you looked up.

And that would scare the shit out of me too.

AA,
the lights of the plane -- flying at Mach 1? LOL how many lights do you think planes have? you're a dumb ass too. they're not lit up with spotlights.
why don't you ask why it didn't swoop into the stadium like you see on all those Hollywood movies.

I didn't mean headlights....I meant the markers on the wings. You can see those right? Maybe I am a dumbass.

Jan 3, 2008, 9:52:00 PM

i didn't say headlights. where did i say headlights? i said spotlights. do you see big spotlights on the ground trying to make it easier to see the plane. the pilot may not like that. nothing like a big white dot in your vision when you're trying to fly a plane at Mach 1.
the markers on the wings -- do you realize federal rules only require ONE on each wing. WOW! that really lights up a plane for TV.
YES, you are a dumbass.
do you hang out by airports after midnight?

Fox just interrupted my local Fox affiliate's newscast to give us some more shots of the Kansas band

First of all, anonymous is a douche. Secondly, nothing scares John Riggins because he was a Redskin. Jimmy, being the bitch Cowboy that he is, is terrified of his own shadow.

Not sure if my first comment posted, so I'll break it down again, perhaps with more detail than the first time:

--Anonymous is the dumbass here. The planes would not fly at the speed of sound, over a stadium, during a flyover in which the entire point is to be seen by the crowd. They were flying, maybe, 350 mph, which is a little more than half the speed of sound (or Mach 1, as your uber-intelligent mind likes to say).

--The jets would turn on the afterburners, they would have lights on the wings, and the city lights and stadium lights would also be on, all aiding in the cause of getting a decent view of a plane flying overhead, even at night. You wouldn't see it as well as you could during the day, obviously, but you'd still see it.

Without citing my credentials, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that I know a little bit more about this stuff than anonymous does. So, enough with the hositility, man. Calm down.

Not to throw a cog into the seeing-the-lights-on-the-plane thing, because I, too, think that anonymous at 10:24 is being a bit of a dick about it, but I thought it was cloudy there during the game? It was raining at one point, so I guess I'm assuming that, but it seems that one can't happen without the other. Clouds might cause a slight problem with being able to see the plane...

Planes are flying at a pretty low altitude during a flyover. Odds are they're below the clouds, but I'm just guessing because I can't find any footage that indicates Fox ever actually showed the flyover at all. Does that exist anywhere?

@erin
No shots of the flyover- they cut to the band instead.

erin,
You have NO credentials!!
Do city and stadium lights point into the skies? if they did A LOT of pilots would be pissed. so how are those lights aiding in seeing the plane?

Saying they were flying at mach 1 was just a reference that they were flying fast -- and you're asking a cameraman on the ground to whip the camera and follow a jet in a 6-inch view finder going 350 mph. LOL

Do you realize an afterburner would be seen as the plane is flying AWAY from the stadium, not TOWARD the stadium?
Do you realize military planes have only ONE light on each wing?

Your 'credentials' are laughable.

Skies over a city are traditionally brighter thanks to the lights from the city itself. The stadium adds to that. Last I checked, the Orange Bowl is somewhere in or around the major metropolitan area of Miami, Florida.

Are you really using these arguments? Seriously, yes, of course the planes were going fast. They generally do in these (and all) situations. Strange, then, that cameraman all the time find ways to get those planes in a shot during a flyover. You'd think if they couldn't, this practice of televising a flyover before major games might end rather quickly.

I'm quite aware of where an afterburner is, thank you. You were saying there would be no lights; I was merely giving an example of what kind of lights would be obvious on a jet flying above a stadium. I didn't realize that one could only view a flyover as it was coming towards them, and not also as it was flying away. Apparently people go temporarily blind if they're not right in front of the planes. Sucks for everyone not in those seats, huh?

I can't believe I got sucked into this one. You must be a barrel of laughs in your everyday life, anonymous.
